Kangna Ranaut; born 20 March 1987) is an Indian actress who acts in Bollywood films. She made her Bollywood debut in 2006 in Gangster. She won both a Filmfare and a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a troubled model in Fashion (2008)Ranaut was born to Asha, a school teacher and Amardeep, a businessman and in a Himachal Family. She has an elder sister, Rangoli and a younger brother Akshit. She was born in a small town called Bhambla in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Her family lives in Mandi.She did her schooling in Chandigarh, Punjab. from DAV model school Sector 15. She then moved to Delhi to become a model. She also joined the Elite Modelling Agency situated in Delhi in 2003 with the prospect of becoming a model.Ranaut started her career as a theatre actor in Delhi with the Asmita Theatre Group She trained under eminent theatre director Arvind Gaur. Ranaut joined Asha Chandra's three-month course in 2004 to brush herself to face camera. Ranaut moved to Mumbai to try her luck in movies. During September 2005, Hindi film-maker Anurag Basu spotted her having coffee in a cafe in Bombay, and offered her the leading role in Gangster, written by Mahesh Bhatt, and she accepted it. Released in 2006, the film became both critically and commercially successful and her performance was especially applauded. This was followed by another acclaimed performance in Woh Lamhe (2006).

Early life and background Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to Ashok Chopra and Madhu Akhauri, both physicians by profession. Chopra spent her childhood in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh; Newton, Massachusetts; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.[6] Her father was in the army and thus her family moved quite frequently. Her father hailed from a family of Punjabi origin, settled in Bareilly and her mother comes from a family, settled in Jamshedpur. She also has a brother, Siddharth, who is seven years younger than she is.[7] Chopra studied at La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow as a young girl. These frequent re-locations took place as her father was a physician in the Indian Army. She subsequently re-located to the U.S. where she studied in Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts and then in John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She returned to India and did her high school at Army School in Bareilly. She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai but left after winning the Miss World pageant. Chopra came in second place at Femina Miss India 2000 competition winning the Femina Miss India World title and subsequently being sent to Miss World where she was crowned Miss World 2000.[8] In the same year, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza, both also from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns respectively, in a rare triple victory for one country. When Chopra won the Miss World crown, she became the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and the fourth Indian woman to win in a span of seven years. On December 12, 2009, Chopra was present as a judge for the Miss World 2009 competition held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Kapoor has been part of several stage shows and world tours since 2002. Her first world tour, the Heartthrobs: Live in Concert, was successfully performed across the United States and Canada alongside Hrithik Roshan, Karisma Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, and Aftab Shivdasani.[83] At the end of the year, she performed alongside several Bollywood stars at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban, South Africa, for the show Now or Never.[84] Four years later, Kapoor took part in the Rockstars Concert world tour, along with Salman Khan, Zayed Khan, John Abraham, Shahid Kapoor, Esha Deol and Mallika Sherawat. The concert was showcased in 19 cities across the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, and went on to become a success.[85] In 2008, Kapoor participated in Shahrukh Khan's Temptation Reloaded 2008, a series of concerts showcased across several different countries. The show, which also featured Arjun Rampal, Katrina Kaif, Ganesh Hegde, Javed Ali and Anusha Dandekar, took place at the Ahoy Rotterdam venue in Rotterdam, Netherlands.[86] Several months later, she again joined Khan, Rampal and Kaif to perform for 15,000 spectators at Dubai's Festival City Arena.[87]
Humanitarian work

During her years in the film industry, Kapoor has also been involved with various humanitarian causes. In November 2003, Kapoor performed at the Marco Ricci Each One Reach One Benefit Concert, a fundraiser for the World Youth Peace Summit,[88] while in 2005, along with other Bollywood stars, she took part in the HELP! Telethon Concert, to help raise money for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.[89] Later that year, she visited the desert heartland of Rajasthan to boost the morale of the jawans for a special Holi weekend episode on the NDTV show, Jai Jawan. The show consists of entertainers and stars visiting Indian troops in isolated regions along with the NDTV team.[90] The following year, Kapoor, along with Priyanka Chopra, donated her half-share of Indian rupee5,000,000 (US$ 113,500) from her winnings on Kaun Banega Crorepati (India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?) to St. Anthony's Old Age Home and Mount Mary's Bandra.[91] In June 2008, Kapoor appeared on the game show Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? alongside Saif Ali Khan, and donated half of her Indian rupee5,000,000 (US$ 113,500) winnings to St. Anthony's Old Age Home.[92] In 2009, she once again donated her winnings of Indian rupee1,000,000 (US$ 22,700) from 10 Ka Dum to the old age home.[93]

At the end of 2009, Kapoor joined the efforts of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to create awareness about cleanliness. The project consisted of a group of individuals who would be responsible for interacting with the shopkeepers and residents of Nehru Nagar, to support a door-to-door campaign for the collection of garbage.[94] The following year, Kapoor attended the NDTV Greenathon, where she adopted the village of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh to provide them with electricity.[95] While there, she also raised awareness on creating a greener future for the environment. She said, "You want to live in an environment that is clean [and] healthy, and especially now everything affects the society so much. Actors have a voice, which can be heard and I am really happy that Priyanka [Chopra] has taken this iniative of being a brand ambassador. When our voice can be heard, we should use it and I am really happy that we all are spreading this awareness."[96]

Amrita Rao stepped in the world of films Raj Kanwar's 'Ab Ke Baras', (2002). She was later seen in Rajkumar Santoshi's 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'. But all the while she was not much of a recognized face in the film industry. It was Ken ghosh's 'Ishq Vishq' which brought her to public notice. Success was not far away from her now. The other movies in line for her were 'Masti', 'Main Hoon Na' and 'Deewar- Let's Bring Our Heroes Home'. Of these once again 'Masti' and 'Main Hoon Na' were hit movies.

Amrita was appreciated for her work in both the films. In 'Main hoon Na', she played a college girl absolute contrast to the one she played in 'Ishq Vishq'. Farah gave her a new hair style. She wore lot of trendy and western stuff. 'Masti' was a comedy film in which she played a house wife who behaves in a peculiar fashion.

Her next couple of films like 'Vaah Life Ho To Aisi' and 'Shikhar' with Shahid Kapoor and 'Pyare Mohan' with Viveik Oberoi were not recieved very well at the box office. But still, her role was appreciated.

A few of her forthcoming films are 'My Name is Anthony Gonsalves' opposite newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi, in which she plays the role of an assistant director, a telugu film, 'Athidi' opposite Prince Mahesh and David Dhawan's 'Hook Ya Crook' with Siddharth (of Rang de Basanti fame). She will also be seen in a song in Sajid Khan's directorial debut 'Hey Baby'.
